Notes - Aug 30, 2010

Many of the staff e-mails in the band office haven’t been working because of server issues. If you can’t get ahold of a staff member, phone 250.949.8343 and leave a message.

There is still CCP funding left over for cultural activities. If you would like to do a traditional activity (food gathering, carving, preparing traditional foods, etc.) you can use funds for the following:

  • $50 honoraria for the elder who leads the activity
  • Small amount of funds for materials or equipment

To get the funding, please submit a written request telling what you plan to do, with who, and when (submit it to Jessie H. at the band office).
Call Jessie H. at 949-8343 for more details.

If you have photos that you want to go on the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Website, please drop off a CD or disc with your pictures at the band office for Jessie H. with your name on it.

The campfire ban has been lifted. Other types of open fires are still banned.

Public Works Update - Aug 30, 2010

Chlorine reading for this week is 0.70. Chlorine is put in our water system to get rid of germs and bacteria. The samples taken are so that we know how much chlorine is in our water supply. The goal is to have good potable drinking water for us to use. There is a shovel that went missing from the cemetery. For Dorie Anne's funeral there were 4 shovels left to cover her grave and only 3 were found.

I open the hall and light the stove when there are funerals for our community if I am available.

Attention Dog Owners - Aug 30, 2010

There have been many complaints made to the Band Office and the Animal Protection staff regarding mistreatment of dogs on the Reserve. If your dog is barking and whining at all hours of the night and day you are mistreating it. Not only is it very disrespectful of your family and neighbours to have to put up with the annoyance, it is also a crime that the residents and owner can be charged with. If you do not know how to look after your dog then ask for advice or give the dog away. There is a $5000 fine for a first offence, $10,000 for a repeat offence, and possibly six.

Fire Safety - Aug 30, 2010

There have been many close calls recently with fire safety. Often these close calls happen because the wrong element was turned on. Please pay close attention any time you use the stove, oven, woodstove, heater, candle, or any other hot item. It is also important that your smoke alarm is working and has a good battery in it. Bob Swain will be coming around to all of the houses to make sure that yours is working. It’s a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher handy in your kitchen, but baking soda will also work to put out small fires.

Elders' Building Policy - Aug 4, 2010

As most of you know, the elders went over the old Elder’s Building Policy and it was also updated. The final policy was agreed upon and sent out to the community. If you would like another copy please don’t hesitate to call or stop by.

Elders' Trip - Aug 4, 2010

Silena reports on her adventures!

Hi Everyone!

As you all know I have been given the opportunity of becoming the Elders’ Coordinator for our community. I started in February, working with Willie. I sure have learned a lot with my new position. The elders and I have been fundraising like crazy since I started and even before, for the annual Elders’ Conference.

The conference took place in Salmon Arm, BC. There was a total of 20 elders from our community, myself, and four other escorts.

The elders would really like to thank those helpers once again for doing such a great job and making the trip that much better. Thank you again Carol, Billy, Dodie, and grandson (Dwayne).

We departed at 6:00am on Monday morning, July 12 by chartered bus. The conference started on Tuesday, July 13 to the 15. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed everyone’s company. We headed as far as Vancouver on Thursday, and arrived home Friday evening safely.

I really enjoyed spending the entire week with each and every one of you, and I look forward to many more adventures with all of you!

Gilakasla!

Forestry Update - Aug 4, 2010

Mahpahkum Floats

In 2009 we applied for funding from the Coast Opportunity Fund. It was approved in January 2010 and work began on building floats for Mahpahkum (Deserters Island). The floats are needed so that boats can tie up at Mahpahkum and people can get ashore.

The logs used are culvert sill logs from a deactivated logging road at Strachan Bay, Seymour Inlet, contributed by the Ministry of Forests and Range. They were bundled and placed in Strachan Bay for towing by Cougar Inlet Logging Ltd., contractor for Mill & Timber Products Ltd. then towed to Port Hardy by John Houghton Towing of Mereworth Sound, Seymour Inlet. The logs were then dewatered and placed in storage at Mill & Timber Products Ltd. dry land sort on the east side of Hardy Bay.

In March John Houghton and Jonathon Walkus built the floats in Hardy Bay, in front of Mill & Timber dry land sort. Then the floats were towed to, and installed at, Mahpahkum on March 31, 2010, by John Houghton and Jonathan Walkus The floats have been positioned but need a walkway built between them and the shore so that it is accessible when the tide changes.

The project manager is Hetlamas, ‘Nakwaxda’xw Hereditary Chief Thomas K. Henderson, Sr. The project supervisor is Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Forestry Coordinator Ted Stevens. Gwa’Nak Resources Ltd. also supplied some of
the funding.
