Treaty Update - Aug 4, 2010

Over this past while, since the large community meeting held in March, we have held several meetings with the Treaty Advisory Committee (TAC) members. They learned about the treaty process including: an overview from when treaties were first signed (1800’s), where we are in negotiations today, what a final Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Treaty could look like, pros and cons of doing a treaty and how treaty lands could be decided on.

There is much to learn as we work together to prepare for another Community – wide treaty meeting in September or October. These sessions are crucial to the success of our treaty negotiations as we move to finalize this Agreement in Principal stage of negotiations toward the next stage – Treaty.

Many people helped with actual negotiations and community meetings. The staff members are Linda Henderson, Natasha Walkus-Puglas and Crystal Walkus, who set up, prepared materials, took notes and cooked for the meetings. Silena George, the Elders and Rose King helped with food preparations. The Elders let us rent their office and meeting spaces. Tom Henderson and Paddy Walkus always advise and support. Willie Walkus gave his time to the negotiations over the past years.

TAC (Treaty Advisory Committee) members gather information and provide input toward our negotiations, they are: Michael George, Lucy Scow, Donna Williams, Bob Swain, Kathy Walkus, Sandra Charlie and Blanch Walkus. Colleen Walkus helped with child minding. David Scott prepares and facilitates discussions on maps and Nicole McLelland helps to organize negotiations. Thank you all.

As well as the meetings, I welcome this newsletter as a way to keep you informed and involved.

Stewardship - Aug 4, 2010

We're getting a pilot Stewardship Program, but what does that mean?

"Stewardship" means looking after the earth, plants, animals, the oceans, laes, rivers and all the important things in nature.

Our people have been "stewards" of our homelands for as long as we can remember, but nowadays we can't always be in our homelands to protect them.

That might change soon, with the pilot Stewardship Program that is happening. This program, also called the “Gwa’sala - ‘Nakwaxda’xw Nation Coastal Guardian Watchmen and Stewardship Pilot Program" will include the Band's purchase of the 28' vessel "Hook Tender" which will allow the Stewardship and Economic Development programs access to our homelands. This vessel will only be operated by fully certified, insured and authorized personnel.

The programs have hired 2 individuals and their training in Safety, as well as the Guardian Watchmen program has started. Our first trips out are planned for August 11. The 2 Watchmen will travel to our homelands and check in on village sites, keep an eye on boats, hunters, and others travelling in our territories. If they see people engaged in illegal activities, such as poaching, our Watchmen will report them.

The Watchmen will also report any wildfires the see, traps, and other things of interest to our community.

The program will run for 16 weeks, as it is a pilot project. If everything works out, it could become a yearly, or even year-long program.

If you have any questions, please contact our program manager, Conrad Browne at 250.902.2301/ecdev@gwanak.info.

Website - Aug 4, 2010

New Computer kiosks and a website will help connect the GN Community and staff.

You may have noticed a new addition in the Band Office lobby: One new computer, free for GN community members to use!

The Treaty department provided these computers and so far, people have been using them to check email, Facebook, and other websites. Soon though, we will have our own website!

CopperMoon is a communications company working with GN staff to build a website for our band that will have information about our history, our culture, staff and departments, community activities, photos, plus many other interesting things.

This website will help community members stay better informed about  what’s going on in our community.

The site will also take some of the work load off of staff, since community members will be able to get forms, policies and other information from the website without having to make an appointment to see a staff member or
come into the Band Office.

If you have ideas for the website, pictures that you want to share, or just have a question, give me a shout at jessieh@gwanakplan.org or 250.902.2306.
