Council By-Election Nominees

November 5th, 6-9:00 PM – Nominations for one band councilor were held at the Eke Me-Xi school.  On Friday evening, approximately 20 people visited to see who was nominated or to nominate someone.

Twelve Nominees were registered by 9:00 PM ,  now they need to pass the tests of eligibility (such as living on the reserve and they agree to be nominated). Their names will be on the ballot for the ADVANCE Polls on November 12th at 6-9:00 PM and again for the Election Day November 19th 8:00 AM-8:00 PM.

Politics is not for the faint of heart or thin of skin. It’s an odd, tough business, where the nice often finish last.

The dictionary says NOMINATE means:

1. the act of officially naming a candidate

2. it is the condition of having been proposed as a suitable candidate for appointment or election

Thank you everyone for attending and now please encourage people to get out and VOTE!

Donna Gault

Electoral Officer

Elders' Building Policy - Sept 13, 2010

This is just a friendly reminder about the current Elders' Center Use and Policy when it comes to renting it for your personal need or workshops. This has been passed through at an Elders' meeting and was agreed upon through voting. You MUST book the building DURING office hours with Silena @ 250.949.7406. The payment MUST be paid in full up front as well as your clean-up fee, otherwise the building will not be opened for your function by anyone. There will be a clean-up fee added to all rentals as our Elders have chosen clean their building themselves. This building is for the Elders to take pride in what they have for their meetings and what not. So please treat this building with the upmost respect as you would an Elder’s house.

Rates are as follows:

  • $50/half-day
  • $100/full-day
  • $20/hr
  • Clean-Up fee per rental is $40
  • Catering is available for $15/plate + receipts.

NO TABLES OR CHAIRS WILL GO OUT OF THE BUILDING!

Office space is also available for $200 per month. (Renters responsible for cleaning of own offices)

Sincerely,

The G&N Elders & Silena, Elder’s Coordinator

CCP Update - Sept 13, 2010

There is a CCP Meeting TONIGHT (Sept. 13, Monday) at the Elders’ Centre, at 5pm. There are a few things on the agenda for this meeting:

  1. Our community needs to review the final CCP draft (complete with photographs, though it still needs some staff feedback) so that we can begin to use it as a guiding document.
  2. Johanna Mazur, one of the UBC students that was helping with the CCP, needs community approval of the project that she worked on, so that she can graduate.
  3. There are still disposable cameras belonging to the CCP that need to be used by community members to take pictures of our community so that I can do the final report on that grant.
  4. We also still have grant funding to build a smoke house, buy a small boat, and do some culture classes. I need some guidance from the community about how to get those things done within the next month or so.

Plus, it would be nice to see some familiar faces and just have a good visit! I hope you have lots of questions for me and I hope that we can have a fun meeting and get a lot done.

So, I hope to see many of you tonight. As always, if you have any questions about the CCP, this newsletter, or any of my work, email jessieh@gwanakplan.org or call 949-8343.

Jessie Hemphill,
former Community Planning Coordinator

Council Update - Sept 13, 2010

There was a Council meeting held on September 2, with Paddy, Crystal, Victor, Terry, and Gary present from the Council.

The next Council meeting was held during the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Trust meeting on September 7, so that Council could make a motion and sign a Band Council Resolution relating to Trust matters. The Councilors attending that meeting were Paddy, Crystal, Terry, Ernie, Gary, and Victor.

The next Council meeting was scheduled for September 8, but there were not enough Councilors for quorum, so it was not an official Council meeting. The Councilors that were there (Crystal, Ernie, Victor and Terry) received a presentation from Pauline Janyst and Terry Assu of the Sasamans Society (formerly known as the North Island Wellness Society).

The next Council meeting is scheduled for September 15 at 10:00 a.m.
